FAQ
How do I make an appointment
You can book online for all services and consultations, click here.
-
Alternatively, you can call Union Tattoo on 04 384 8071 for any inquiries with the booking process or use the contact form on our website.
-
We do take walk-ins where possible. However appointments are strongly encouraged.
What is the deposit for
The deposit you leave is non refundable but will be deducted from the total price of your piercing. Leaving a deposit helps us ensure a smooth appointment system, keeping our time well-utilised. We do not charge for consultations so deposits are a guarantee and commitment for both piercer and piercee. If you book an appointment and don’t turn up then you have prevented someone else from getting pierced.

What if I need to reschedule
Hey, sometimes life gets in the way. We will always try to be as accomodating as possible. We ask for 48 hours notice for rescheduling and your deposit will be moved to your new appointment time.
-
Rescheduling with less than 48 hours notice may find your deposit forfeit.
How much will my piercing cost
You can read more about our price structure here.
-
All our appointments are structured as service fee + jewellery cost. The service fee is what you see when you click to book an appointment; this includes the piercer's time, expertise, all the necessary equipment, hygiene, etc.
-
From here, the jewellery cost will vary depending on what you choose; we carry a comprehensive range of options at a variety of price points. Our accents start at $17 and can range up to hundreds, or sometimes even thousands. For more information on our jewellery, click here.
-
We structure like this due to the jewellery cost being a different aspect to the overall piercing experience and the service fee compensating for the labour and expertise of the piercer. Because we also have such an incredibly extensive range of jewellery available we want to assist people in having the freedom to find that perfect piece of jewellery for them.
-
A conch piercing is:
$50 service fee + $25 labret + $17 (or more) accent for a total from $92. Our booking page lists $50 as the service fee.
-
A few piercing placements are inclusive of jewellery, this is mentioned on the booking page where applicable.
What if I'm getting multiple piercings at once
We offer discounted service fees on getting multiple piercings at once, this is reflected in the price on the booking pages. If you're booking piercings that don't otherwise have a combined booking option, subsequent service fees are still discounted on piercings done in the same appointment.
-
Subsequent services fees are 50% off. (of the lesser value)
-
We recommend a comfortable maximum of (generally) 3 piercings done in a single session or to be "fresh" at once. The more we give our body to deal with at once, the more intensive the healing process can become.
What is your age policy
All piercing appointments have a little age icon next to them indicating the minimum age someone can be to receive that service.
-
If you're under 16 booking a service we will require a parent to be present with you at the appointment. They will cross-sign consent paperwork and we will require ID from both parent and the individual under 16.
-
If you're 16-17 you can book a limited range of services, we will require ID.
-
If you're 18+ you can access our full range of services. Just like buying alcohol, we may require ID.
-
We accept driver's licenses, passports, Kiwi Access Cards.

Can I bring a friend
Absolutely! Piercing can be a sometimes scary experience - although we mostly aim for words like exhilarating, empowering, exciting.
-
We welcome you bringing a support person with you, we just ask that there is only one support person in the piercing space with you. This is to limit the risk of distraction and to maintain a clean, calm space for the process.
Can I bring my own jewellery
As we want to ensure the upmost quality and cleanliness of the jewellery we pierce with this is rarely possible. Especially when a piercing is fresh they can be incredibly fussy and we want to give them the best possible success for healing, therefore we opt for our own jewellery where we can have this guarantee.
-
If you've previously purchased jewellery from us we may be able to use parts of it, such as accented tops, for a fresh piercing. However we require time to assess, and if suitable process, the jewellery. If you would like to do this we will need the jewellery a minimum of 24 hours in advance, please contact us first detailing the piece you would like to use.
Why do you not use guns or cartridges
Although guns seem quicker and easier, there is a lot more to be mindful of and a lot of risks we open ourselves up to. Even more importantly is that needles are actually easier and, better yet, less painful!
- Guns can't be adequately sterilised
- Cause excessive tissue damage through blunt-force trauma
- Can create excess scarring
- Cross-contamination risks, including blood-borne pathogens such as Hepatitis
- Inadequate and inappropriate jewellery options
- Issues become exacerbated with untrained staff and unregulated facilities
For more information we refer to the Australasian Association of Professional Piercers official guidelines, click here.
When can I put a ring in my piercing
Unfortunately, this is where we have to adjust Beyonce's words a tiny bit; If you like it you should wait to put a ring on it!
-
Nearly all (with exceptions like daith and septum) piercings heal best with a labret- or barbell-style jewellery when fresh. This helps minimise movement, irritation, and trauma during healing. Because of this, we want to ensure the piercing is as settled as possible before introducing a ring.
-
Depending on placement this can be 3 months, 8 months, or 12+ months.
Can I use numbing cream
Unfortunately, the short answer is no. We also reserve the right to refuse service if you show up to the appointment with numbing cream applied.
-
Numbing cream is not recommended for piercings for three reasons:
Firstly, it doesn't really work for piercings. Numbing creams, especially over-the-counter, are quite limited in their efficacy. While they can be sometimes beneficial for tattoos, for example, because piercings are much more three-dimensional and not just skin-deep, positive numbing effect is limited.
Secondly, and more importantly, it impacts tissue tension and texture. Most numbing creams work with lidocaine and vasoconstrictors. This constriction means the skin moves and shifts. A piercing which is made perfectly straight on numbed tissue may end up crooked once the tissue relaxes.
Thirdly, we're not medical professionals (even if we'd like to think we are sometimes!) and numbing cream can produce some serious side effects. Especially if they enter the bloodstream, which, there is a risk of when creating a piercing.
-
We practically minimally invasive technique and focus on creating the most comfortable piercing possible. It'll only be a very quick pinch! With the reward (piercing) lasting much much longer.
What if I'm pregnant or breastfeeding
If your pregnant, now is not the time to be getting pierced. Your body is tackling a lot, it's an incredible machine, and while it's an incredible machine, the last thing we want to do is add extra work (healing a piercing) for the body to do. Come back and see us after your little one is a few months old and you've settled into the new routines of life.
-
We then typically suggest waiting 3-6 months post-partum before getting new piercings. As above, it can take the body a little bit of time to recover and it's important to us that we try and give any fresh piercing the best possible start to life.
-
If you lactate for other reasons (medication) this is generally not an issue. However if you're interested in getting nipple piercings while lactating, please email us in the first instance.
