They are a popular piercing especially during summertime. Although, as it is unadvisable to go swimming for the first month post-piercing they typically heal easier in winter.

Regardless of shape or size, a defined navel "shelf" that can comfortably accommodate is the key component behind a successful navel piercing. They are typically slow, but easy, to heal. As with other torso piercings they are more tucked away from damage than ear or facial piercings. It is important to not rest any waistbands on them while healing; any friction or trauma from clothing can cause issues. Consider planning this around school or work uniforms, or for those fond of high-waisted pants.

Generally the navel itself is either open or closed - like an eye. Open navels are more suited to bottom-adorned pieces of jewellery, whereas closed navels are better suited for upper-adorned pieces.

Average healing time 9-12 months.
Recommended follow-up 6-12 weeks.
